How Much Does a Wireless POS System Cost?

Do I Need a Wireless Point of Sale System?

Wireless technology is where the world is headed. Our phones have long been wireless. Our Internet is wireless. Why would a modern POS system be any different?

If you’ve ever visited an Apple store, you’ve seen a wireless POS system in action. Store employees use an iPod touch, not a fixed POS system, to process sales. Or, maybe you’ve dined at a restaurant where the waiter or waitress used a handheld computer to send your order directly from the table. That’s wireless POS, too.

About Wireless POS Systems

Aside from the handheld component, wireless POS systems are very similar to traditional POS systems. They consist of computer hardware, software, monitors, receipt printers and cash drawers. There’s typically a fixed POS station in the kitchen or the back of the restaurant, even when wireless devices are used.

The wireless device itself can be a number of things: a handheld computer, a smart phone or a tablet. Some handheld computer versions come with a built-in credit card swipe to allow for instant payment processing. You might have seen these on airplanes - flight attendants use them to ring up extras like snacks, cocktails and blankets.

Wireless POS systems are most common in restaurants, where speed is crucial. A server can send an order right from one table and then immediately move to the next table without having to walk all the way to the kitchen to put in the order. Wireless POS saves time, increases turnover and keeps customers happy.

Cost of Wireless POS Systems

Wireless POS system bundle packages starts at about $4,000 to $6,000. This will get you one or two handheld terminals with built-in credit card processors, a wireless communication center, software and at least one printer. Additional handheld POS terminals usually cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500.

Not surprisingly, wireless POS systems are more expensive than wired systems, which start at about $2,000 per station.
