About Bar POS Systems

A point of sale (POS) system is essentially the modern version of a cash register. Most bar POS systems are fixed stations consisting of hardware, software, payment processing equipment, a cash drawer and a receipt printer. Touchscreen monitors are quickly becoming the norm, so keyboards are less common.

In addition to these fixed stations, you can also opt for mobile POS systems, which allow servers and cocktail waiters to ring in orders directly from the table, saving time, increasing turnover and improving customer service.

Perhaps the best feature of POS systems is that they allow bar owners and managers to track and analyze all sorts of data that can be used to make better business decisions. Find out which liquors are selling and which are not, for example, or collect customer information that can be used to put together targeted marketing campaigns.

Cost of Bar POS Systems

The price of bar POS systems varies widely based on the level of technology, and the type and amount of hardware that is purchased.

You can buy a basic system off the shelf for about $1,000, but you’ll have to set it up yourself and there will be no tech support. Also, the software that comes with these systems often has limited capabilities.

In most cases, you’re looking at spending anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000 on a complete POS system. That includes hardware such as a monitor, keyboard and barcode scanner; software; installation; training; customer support.

For $2,000-$4,000, you can get a standard systems that includes a touchscreen monitor with built-in computer, cash drawer, credit card swiper, thermal receipt print, all of the necessary power cables, a warranty and customer support.

Wireless POS systems start at about $4,000. They come with all of the features above and also a wireless tablet with a built-in credit card swiper. For $6,000 to $8,000, you can often score a system with two tablets. As you can see, the tablets have a significant impact on price. But they are becoming more affordable as technology improves.
