The term ‘gas forklift’ can mean several things, actually. Most people use the term generally to refer to internal combustion (IC) forklifts, which can be powered by gasoline, liquid propane or diesel fuel. These machines are designed for outdoor use; it is dangerous to use most models indoors.

Internal combustion forklifts have lift capacities ranging from about 5,000-50,000 pounds. They’re often used on construction sites, at loading docks and in lumberyards. Smaller IC forklifts are generally powered by gasoline or liquid propane (and some can switch between the two), while larger models most often run on diesel.

IC forklifts tend to be more powerful than electric models and they never require charging, which means the machine is never out of commission, unless it is being serviced or repaired. However, IC forklifts are more expensive to operate and they produce harmful emissions.

In some cases, IC forklifts powered by liquid propane can be used indoors. However, gasoline and diesel forklifts are never safe for indoor use.

Gas forklift prices depend on the type of machine you choose, the brand and your geographic location.

• A 5,000-pound capacity forklift powered by gasoline and/or liquid propane might range in price from $16,000 to $30,000.
• A diesel forklift with a 10,000-pound lift capacity might sell for $30,000 to $45,000.
• A diesel lift with a 35,000-pound capacity would likely sell for $100,000 or more.

If you’re on a tight budget, considering buying a used forklift. Often, you can cut the purchase price in half. Just be sure you’re purchasing from a reputable dealer and always test drive the machine before you buy.
