WaterSense is a program set up by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to preserve the nation’s water supply. The WaterSense label on a bathroom faucet or accessory indicates that the product is highly water efficient.
The maximum water flow rate for a WaterSense faucet is 1.5 gallons per minute, which is 30 percent less than the standard rate of 2.2 gallons per minute. Yet, the EPA maintains that WaterSense faucets perform just as well. The faucets limit the gallons per minute to 1.5 while maintaining a water pressure of 60 pounds per square inch (psi), which is the common water pressure in most households.
According to the EPA, replacing your old faucet with a WaterSense faucet save the average family 700 gallons of water per year, the equivalent of 40 showers. It also reduces water heather use, saving enough energy per home to run a hair dryer for 10 minutes per day.
WaterSense faucets and accessories (i.e. aerators and laminar flow devices) are usually priced similarly to traditional faucets and accessories. The style and design of a faucet have the greatest impact on price, not the functionality.
Toilets and shower heads are also available with the WaterSense label, but the specification has yet to be applied to kitchen sinks. All WaterSense products are third-party tested to make sure they conform to EPA standards.
