Fertilizing is crucial to a healthy and beautiful lawn. Watering and reseeding aren’t always enough to keep your lawn looking lush and green. Experts recommend fertilizing at least twice per year, but difficult lawns might require monthly or bi-monthly treatments.
Professional fertilizing treatments are surprisingly affordable. Leaving the work to the pros not only guarantees that it’s done properly, but it frees up your time for more enjoyable activities.
About Fertilization
Fertilizer is essentially just food for your lawn. Not all fertilizers are equal in quality, but a reputable company will use top-grade products. Professionals also know how to apply the fertilizer to achieve the best and fastest results.
Keep in mind that some companies will require you to sign a 12-month contract for fertilization. Because the cost per visit is relatively low, it’s not worth the effort for many companies to come just once or twice. Be sure to read the fine print before signing any contract, though.
Before you hire a company, make sure it licensed in your state to apply feed and/or weed control products, if your state regulates that activity. Check the company’s track record with the Better Business Bureau. And find out what kind of fertilizer is used - make sure it is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Cost to Fertilize a Lawn
The cost of professional fertilization depends mostly on the size of your yard. However, your location and the size of the company also play a role. Larger companies tend to charge more because they have more overhead.
Pricing is typically quoted per 1,000 square feet of lawn space. Most companies charge anywhere from $0.04 to $0.12 per 1,000 square feet.
- For a 12,500 square foot yard (.29 acres), that works out to $50-$150 per application.
- For a half acre yard (21,780 square feet), that works out to about $87-$260.
Organic fertilizers fall on the higher end of those price ranges. And keep in mind that most companies charge a minimum for coming out to do the service - often $35 or $50.
If you need regular service, consider signing a one-year contract. Most companies offer per-visit discounts for committing to the service in advance. Expect to pay anywhere from $250-$1,000 per year, depending on the size of your lawn and the frequency of visits.
