Just like your house, car, or yard, your driveway needs occasional maintenance to keep it in good working order and ensure that it lasts for a long time. Before looking for a company to seal your driveway, review these frequently asked questions about the driveway sealing process.
Why Should I Sealcoat My Driveway?
Like anything else, your driveway is worn down by everyday life. Whether it’s the sun, rain, snow, wind, or just the wear and tear that comes from everyday vehicle and foot traffic, the concrete and asphalt of your driveway will start to crack, chip, and erode. Driveway sealing refurbishes those cracks and holes, giving your driveway a fresh look that will keep it solid for years. Think of it as painting the walls of your house or getting standard car maintenance.
How Often Should I Seal My Driveway?
The answer is highly variable and based on the climate where you live. Climates with a lot of sun and heat or a lot of wintry weather typically require more frequent sealing. In general, sealing is recommended every two to five years. Some people like to do it more often to keep their driveways looking smooth and well-maintained, but as long as you do it before the five-year mark you should be good to go. Typically, concrete driveways can go longer between sealings than asphalt ones.
What is the Ideal Weather for Sealing?
You should avoid the winter months if you live in an area that gets consistently cold winter weather. Temperatures should not be below 50 degrees when you are having your driveway sealed. Sealing should also not be done when it rains. Driveway sealing companies are careful about checking the weather report, but if it rains within 24 hours of a sealing, they will have to come back and reseal certain areas.

What About Fixing Cracks?
Cracks are a common reason to have your driveway resealed, but sealing alone will not fill in and remove substantial cracks in your driveway. For that to happen, the cracks must be filled with rubberized crack sealer before the driveway is worked on. Before committing to a company, be sure to ask if they’ll seal cracks for you, as not all driveway sealing companies offer this service.
What Do I Need to Do Before the Driveway is Sealed?
All you have to do is make sure your driveway is clear of all clutter and obstructions. Vehicles should be removed along with toys, branches, rocks, and any other debris. Oil stains should be removed if possible, but no other genuine cleaning is required.
How Long Should I Wait Before Using the Driveway After It’s Sealed?
You only need to wait a couple of hours for the sealing to dry before you can walk and run on the driveway. However, you should wait at least 24 hours before driving any vehicles on your driveway.
How Much Should I Expect to Pay?
The cost of driveway sealing depends on factors such as your location and the square footage of your driveway. As a rule of thumb, professional sealing will cost 10 to 25 cents per square foot.
