As you’re well aware, pools require significant maintenance and upkeep. And it’s not just the pool itself that needs tending to. The decking around the pool will wear out at some point, requiring repairs, repair, resurfacing or replacement.
Stamped concrete is a popular decking material for pool surrounds because it is affordable, durable and attractive. It requires less maintenance and upkeep than a wood deck, and it looks better than plain concrete. However, over time your stamped concrete may begin to fade and crack, requiring some attention.
Repairing vs. Resurfacing Stamped Concrete
Repairing stamped concrete generally involves filling in any cracks and leveling the surface, while resurfacing addresses surface-level imperfections and involves restaining the concrete to bring back its original texture, vibrancy and coloring. In most cases, if you’re repairing the concrete, it will also need to be resurfaced.
When you resurface, you also have the option to change the color, pattern and/or texture of the concrete stain. Maybe you’re sick of the old color and pattern, or maybe it shows too much dirt. Some colors, patterns and textures are more expensive than others, but making a change doesn’t necessarily drive up the price of resurfacing. If you pick a comparable color and pattern, the price should be comparable.
Keep in mind, however, that repairing and resurfacing are not great solutions if the concrete is very old and in severe disrepair. If the concrete has severe cracks or gaps, an unstable sub base, or it is sinking, you’re probably looking at replacement.

Cost of Repairing or Resurfacing Stamped Concrete
The cost of repairing concrete is entirely dependent on the number of cracks and their size. You could spend a couple hundred dollars or several thousand. Resurfacing usually costs anywhere from $3 to $8 per square foot, depending on the condition of the concrete, your location, and the color, pattern and texture you select.
In order to get a more accurate estimate, we recommend seeking quotes from several local companies. Many companies offer free estimates, and it’s always best to compare prices before you commit to any work. We also recommend doing background research on all companies you’re considering. Find out how long they’ve been in business, and search for customer reviews online. Keep in mind that one or two bad reviews could be a fluke. But be wary of companies with a slew of complaints.
