Bay windows rose to popularity in the Victorian era of the late 19th century, but they remain a popular feature of modern architecture.
Bay windows provide a lot of sunlight and make rooms feel larger. They’re great for kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, offices - just about any place in the home.
About Bay Windows
Traditional bay windows are polygonal in shape, with angles of 135 and 150 degrees; however, there are endless possibilities when it comes to custom varieties. Bay windows most often span a single story, although they can span multiple stories.
There are several variations of bay windows, including:
- Box bay - Rectangular or box-shaped (90 degrees), as opposed to polygonal
- Oriel - Rounded windows on the upper stories 0f a building; made popular during the Gothic era
- Bow - Semi-circular in shape with softer angles than traditional versions
- Circle - Closer to a perfect circle than the bow; often wrapped around the corners of a building
Cost of Bay Windows
Bay windows vary widely in price, ranging from a couple hundred dollars to many thousands.
- A large bay window for a living room might cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500, including installation.
- A small bay window above the kitchen sink might cost $200-$300.
- Very large, custom bay windows could top $5,000.
Material has biggest impact on price. Wood windows are the most expensive, followed by fiberglass, vinyl and aluminum. Size is a close second in determining price.
Cost is also slightly influenced by the type of window (i.e. casement or double hung). Casement windows, which hinge on the side and are opened using a crank handle, are slightly more expensive than double-hung windows, which have two moveable panels that slide vertically. They are more energy efficient and the crank is more complex to make.
The type of glass that is used also affects the price, with energy efficient and double-pane varieties adding to the total cost.
